Anello Grigna Meridionale

Rock Scrambling among the Clouds

I’ve visited Grignetta twice now, and each trip has been uniquely memorable. The first time, I tackled the multi-pitch route Via Classica— an easy climb with an epicly strenuous approach. For my second time, I decided to trade ropes for boots and hike it instead. I vividly remembered the steep approach and the breathtaking views, so I was thrilled to explore this moody mountain on foot and it didn’t disappoint.

Parking and Trailhead

We parked at Piani dei Resinelli, which is the starting point for most adventures in the area. From there, we headed toward Rifugio Soldanella and followed Via Carlo Mauri until we veered right off the paved road to join Anello Meridionale (the Southern Ring).

The Trail

The trail is steep from the start and gets progressively steeper as you approach the summit. Some sections are equipped with chains, but we found that a full Via Ferrata kit wasn’t necessary. Holding onto the chains provided enough support for the more challenging parts. The path is well-marked with CAI signs pointing toward Cresta Sinigaglia and Grigna Meridionale Vetta, making navigation straightforward. - for full disclosure, we did get slightly off trail once and had to scramble uphill to join the right trail but it was a user error more than a flaw of the trail.

The Weather

The views from Grignetta are truly incredible — even when they’re shrouded in fog. Both of my visits have been in late autumn, a season when northern Italy turns dramatically gray, foggy, and mysterious. If you prefer clear skies, I recommend visiting in spring or summer and checking the weather forecast beforehand.

That said, I have no regrets about hiking in the moody autumn weather. The fleeting views through fast-moving clouds were stunning, and walking through the mist felt like hiking on another planet. The dramatic atmosphere made the experience unique and unforgettable.

Winter Warning: This trail is not recommended in full winter conditions. Snow can make the loose terrain dangerous without proper equipment and training.

The Friendly Locals

The trail winds through the steep ridges of Grignetta Park, which is a favoured habitat for wildlife. Along the way, it is not uncommon to spot squirrels, badgers, deer, roe deer, and foxes. If you’re lucky, you’ll encounter Alpine chamois perched on rugged slopes. They often pause to curiously observe hikers before demonstrating their agility and darting down steep inclines. Keep your eyes peeled and your camera ready!

The Summit: Bivacco Ferrario

Perched at the top is the Bivacco Ferrario, an octagonal shelter that somewhat resembles a spaceship. Inside, it’s sparse but sufficient to provide overnight shelter in emergencies.

The bivouac’s history is both amusing and unfortunate. In 1986, it was airlifted to the summit by helicopter, but strong winds caused it to topple down the mountain. The pieces had to be brought back up manually and reassembled on-site. Today, it’s securely fixed at the peak.

The bivouac is dedicated to mountaineer Bruno Ferrario, who tragically lost his life on Pizzo Cassandra in Sondrio. It’s constructed from aluminum with wood and cork interiors and can accommodate 6-8 people in emergencies.

The Descent

Descending Grignetta is exactly as you’d imagine: steep and demanding. While your lungs get a break, your knees will need to work overtime. Fortunately, the way down isn’t short on breathtaking views, offering plenty of picture-perfect spots to pause and rest. The trail becomes progressively less steep and more stable as you near the base. Be mindful of loose rocks and take it slow.

Celebrating at a Rifugio

After a day of adventure, there’s no better way to celebrate than at one of the local rifugios. These mountain huts are the heart of the climbing and hiking community, offering warm meals, cold beers, and a true mountaineer atmosphere. Treat yourself to some local delicacies as you bask in the satisfaction of your accomplishments.

Wrap-Up

Grignetta is one of my favourite destinations in the Lecco area, offering a mix of fun and challenging adventures for both hikers and climbers. With so many trails and routes left to explore, I’m excited to continue discovering what this mountain has to offer. While the trail is easy to follow is still good to have a map, whether physical or digital to follow. We use All Trail:
