The 5 Best Speakeasies in Milan

Where to Find Them and How to Get In

Everyone talks about them, but few really know them. Here are the best speakeasies in Milan and the secret to gaining access.

Imagine walking past the brick buildings and old storefronts near St. Mark’s Place, close to Tompkins Square Park in New York. You spot a small restaurant with a big red hot dog-shaped sign that says "Eat Me." If you step inside, you’ll find yourself in an old-school diner where you can enjoy a fantastic hot dog, with more variations than you could ever imagine.

But look closer. In one corner, there’s an old-fashioned telephone booth—the kind Clark Kent would use to transform into Superman. Inside, a vintage rotary phone hangs on the wall. Pick up the receiver, dial 2, turn the dial clockwise, release, and wait. A voice will answer: Do you have a reservation? Of course, you don’t. But if you’re lucky, they’ll tell you they can still let you in. Suddenly, the back of the booth swings open, revealing a secret passage to a hidden bar—Please Don’t Tell.

The concept of speakeasies dates back to the Prohibition era, but in recent years, these hidden bars have made a massive comeback, creating an undeniable allure. Milan is home to some incredible spots—places that steal your heart and make you want to return. But what are the best speakeasies, and how do you get in?

1. 1930

Exposed brick walls, dim lighting, and an atmosphere straight out of the Prohibition era make this place truly unique. The staff looks like they walked straight out of a classic film, and the selection of fine spirits is unmatched. But the real question is: How do you get in?

The location is a well-kept secret. However, there’s a way to secure an invitation. Ever heard of Mag, the famous bar along the Navigli? Visit the owners and convince them that you are the right person to enter the exclusive 1930 club.

2. White Rabbit

Who hasn’t heard of the White Rabbit? This is another must-visit speakeasy. Unlike 1930, you can easily find the address online. But there’s a catch—before you step inside, you must ring the bell and say the password.

Once you enter, you’ll feel like you’ve travelled back in time, surrounded by vintage magazines, paintings, and decor inspired by the Prohibition era. And here’s a twist: have you ever been to a bar where the staff wears rabbit masks?

3. Backdoor 43

Claiming the title of the smallest bar in the world, Backdoor 43 is truly one of a kind. This tiny speakeasy can only accommodate four guests at a time, making it the ultimate private drinking experience.

Before arriving, you and your friends will fill out a form selecting your preferred alcohol, flavours, and cocktail styles—you even get to choose your own glassware and music for the night!

And if you don’t manage to snag a reservation? Don’t worry. When the bartender isn’t busy with guests, they put on a Guy Fawkes mask and serve takeaway cocktails through a small window to passersby on the street.

4. MAG Café

A true Navigli institution, MAG Café is one of those places that feels like a well-kept secret—except that everyone seems to know about it.

Warm, dimly lit, and packed with vintage charm, this cozy cocktail bar effortlessly blends sophistication with a touch of nostalgia. Whether you're lounging by the window, sipping a carefully crafted Moscow Mule, or settling into an armchair with a glass of red, MAG has a way of making time slow down.

5. Dandelion

Think you’ve discovered all of Milan’s speakeasies? Think again. Dandelion is a brand-new hidden gem, offering an immersive experience that will make you want to return instantly.

How do you get in? Head to their Instagram page and request access. From there, the game begins—spoiler alert: you’ll have to solve a riddle.

The location? You’ll find out on the day of your visit.
